Writing M/F vs M/M: the loonies really come out of the woodwork!

I didn't realize that when you start writing Chris Evans or Seb Stan in a M/F pairing (versus Stucky) that it brings out all the ALGs! (Angry Little Girls™️)

This reviewer took issue with how my author's comments joked about Alba being too young for Chris and could he please call me up so I can explain to him why I'm clearly a much better choice to be his GF?

I just wanna say, if you were one of those little girls who got mad about injustice BUT you DID get taught that's just the way the world works and life isn't fair, and punished until you cut down your anger into small and manageable pieces that can't hurt anyone but you... I wrote SAINTS OF STORM AND SORROW about a failed child chosen one who learns it's never too late to choose defenestration as an answer

I love Matilda because it's a story about a child who sees injustice around her and gets mad about it and questions why things aren't fair, and instead of the ending being that she learns how the world works and that life isn't fair, she catapults one of the adults who abused her out of a building with her mind

honestly, it feels a bit of a disservice to me how people immediately label kotoko as someone who doesn't care for the people she saves when there's clearly a much more interesting relationship at hand here!

we know how kotoko gets when she doesn't care: she's stone-faced, she's self-assured, she's above it all ...but when a scared little girl hugs her? she doesn't roll her eyes or click her tongue; instead, she freezes, sweats profusely, and yanks the child off her. she just murdered someone seconds ago but it's the child she's antsy with?

Kotoko: "Treat you like a child? Hah, you’ve got to be kidding. Back when I was your age, I was already the person I am today. I don’t have any plans to let you get away with something just “because you’re a child.” ...Remember that."

i don't want to say anything concrete just yet but—especially when you take a look at mikoto—there's a very obvious fear at play with kotoko's relationship in protecting someone weaker than her. just like there's newborn imagery baked into john doe's character, kotoko is the little red riding hood, the child, who's been swallowed by a wolf.

I jokingly thought before that reading Junie B. Jones as a kid turned me into a feminist, but unironically, it kind of did.

I honestly think it comes down to the fact that Junie B. was not only allowed to be "weird," but her character arc never concluded like other girl characters would. In other media featuring "weird girls," the girl always ended her arc tamed - by force or convince, she would be prettied up, she would smile and be polite, and she would never speak out of turn. She would be perfect then, and would shed her veneer of individuality with the freedom that is conformity. As a kid, I noticed that girls weren't permitted to be "weird" like boys were. So when I read Junie B. Jones, I loved that she was frankly just fucking weird. She said things out of turn, she was rambunctious and imaginative and she was a realistic portrayal of a little girl. I loved reading those books because the narrative taught her lessons without punishing her for being weird, if that makes sense. So often, narratives punished weird girls for the crime of being a socially unacceptable girl, not for any true wrongdoing like lying.

Anyway, I just think it's interesting, because I watched and read a ton of books and shows and movies featuring girls and women, but none of them truly empathized with (or even tried to empathize with) weird girls on their own merits and capabilities and terms, or embraced the idea of a "socially inept/unacceptable" girl without punishing her in some way for her supposed ineptitude.

i know i make this same fucking joke every month, but it’s just so funny/ironic to me. the lesbian urge to get absolutely fucking wrecked by another woman versus the asexual desire to just not want to do that ™.

anyway, i’ve figured out that these are, in fact, my last two brain cells, and why i can never get anything done/make simple decisions.
